7 Secret Wonders of World Travel

There are a lot of reasons to travel the world, most of which are wonderful. For instance, you get the opportunity to meet new people, fall in love with other cultures, expand your mind and most importantly see the beauty in the world. I grew up knowing about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, vaguely realizing beautiful sights were just waiting to be explored.

It wasn’t until I did some traveling that I began to understand how amazing the world really is, and why everyone should do it. After going on two, around-the-world travel trips by myself (the first lasting one year and the second lasting eight months), I’ve come to a new level of appreciation for my place in the universe and the spontaneity of life. I suggest you look into Airtreks to start planning the adventure of a lifetime.

You will discover yourself.

Without getting too “Eat Pray Love” here, this is something that happens whether you like it or not. Going to the corners of the Earth and finding, that you actually have some sort of meaningful purpose to offer is one of the best feelings ever. After my first year-long trip I realized a lot of things about myself that I didn’t know before. A big one for me is getting out of my comfort zone, adapting, and having fun in any situation.

You will start to understand another way of life.

I’ve met some great people from completely different walks of life and loved them so much for introducing me to new ideas. Your friends should challenge you. Making new friends in foreign cities will inevitably do this and more.

You will realize who the important people in your life are.

Somewhere between Italy and Turkey, I started to realize that some people cared enough to send me letters or calls. This also works the other way around, and I realized I was not as close to some people as I previously thought. You will promise to stay in touch with all of your friends, but this is impossible and pointless.

You will appreciate the ties that bind humanity.

“We are all human. It’s time to prove it.” This is a great quote from one of the only Anti-Flag songs that have stuck with me past junior high school. People are people no matter where you go. The differences between people and nations are not as important as we think. These so-called differences surprisingly slip away once you make new friends and take on the aspects of a different culture.

You will gain the ability to slow down.

Doing things at a naturally slow pace is good for the soul. Take some time to breathe it all in, participating in each moment fully before rushing off to the next. I love to do yoga (the Americanized version of a sacred Hindu practice) because it allows me to take some time for breathing and living in the moment. World travel has given me a new appreciation for this.

You will learn to be spontaneous.

Traveling alone has helped me make decisions impulsively every once in a while. It’s a lot of fun! In New Zealand, I met a friend one day at the beach and we decided that day that we would do tandem swinging together (like bungee jumping but less intimidating). I’ve never been inclined to take risks, but I’m so glad I was able to start.

You will see the beauty in the world.

Okay, maybe this one isn’t such a secret, but it is still a huge wonder brought to you by world travel. Most people don’t know the extent of this fact. Considering the sheer amount of beautiful things to see and experience, why not just get out there and do it?
